the sustainability of MOSO: eco-friendly bamboo flooring
MOSO Bamboo floors combine the virtues of the best hardwoods (hardness, looks, stability) with the immense growing capacity of the highly renewable, sustainable bamboo species MOSO, and can therefore act as a promising fast-growing alternative for tropical hardwood. Below we will explain why MOSO bamboo flooring is the most eco-friendly choice in the flooring market.

MOSO Bamboo: The fastest growing plant in the world

harvesting age full grown plants in years

The sustainable bamboo species MOSO is a giant bamboo (grows up to 20 meters high) which is ready for harvest after 5 years for use in durable products. This stands in sharp contrast with the growing time of hardwood species which often take over 50 years to mature and are increasingly scarce and, consequently, more expensive.

Interestingly, one bamboo plant consists of several poles and new shoots will grow from the mother plant every year. Generally 20-25% of the poles in a sustainable bamboo forest or plantation can be harvested each year without decreasing the size of the plantation or the number of poles per hectare. This means that the plant does not die after harvesting.  On the contrary, by harvesting the mature poles, the yield and quality of the plantation actually increases.

Sustainable bamboo forestry and FSC® certification

It is evident that MOSO only sources sustainable bamboo material from well managed forests and plantations. In producing bamboo products no deforestation is necessary or even possible, since as explained above, only the 5 years old stems are harvested (if the stems are not mature they are useless for use in durable products).

Since recently, bamboo is also available with FSC® certification. FSC® is globally recognized as the best and most stringent responsible certification system in the wood industry. For bamboo however it has always been questionable if FSC® certification was really necessary:  bamboo is not a wood, it is a grass with its own harvesting requirements. Nevertheless, to meet the growing demand for FSC® certified sustainable bamboo products, MOSO was one of the first bamboo suppliers to become FSC® certified.

Healthy indoor environment – low emissions

For a healthy indoor climate it is important that products used indoors have very low emissions and comply with the European E1 norm. All MOSO bamboo floors meet this standard and several of them are even made with adhesives with no added formaldehyde and therefore comply with E0, the strictest norm available. Furthermore, all MOSO bamboo floors have been rated A and A+ in France with respect to emissions of volatile organic compounds: the best classification possible!

sustainable bamboo: CO2 neutral or better over full life cycle

carbon footprint in CO2equ/kg, depending on MOSO product assessed

LCA (ISO 14040/44) and carbon footprint studies executed by Delft University of Technology have confirmed that all solid MOSO bamboo flooring and bamboo decking is CO2 neutral or better over the full life cycle, for more information about the official report please refer to the general MOSO website
